REPORT | Dons 28 Widnes Vikings 12

The Dons took a superb victory on home soil as they saw off Widnes Vikings convincingly at the Eco-Power Stadium.

Reece Lyne opened the scoring on his return from injury for Richard Horne's side, and another try from James Glover saw the hosts comfortably ahead at the break.

Titus Gwaze and Edene Gebbie added second half tries and left the Dons to see out a comfortable victory as they climbed up to second place in the Betfred Championship table.
Horne made three changes to the side that started in the win over Goole Vikings two weeks earlier, with Mitieli Vulikijapani, Lyne and Suaia Matagi all handed spots in the starting XIII.
The opening ten minutes saw a real arm wrestle for an opening in a strongly contested game, but the Dons broke the deadlock on 11 minutes.
The hosts went right from centre and found Lyne, who powered through a bundle of Widnes players on the wing to score in the corner. Connor Robinson converted.
Horne's men were in front and were presented with an opportunity to further their lead five minutes later when the Vikings' Mick Butt was sin-binned and the referee gave a penalty for a late foul on Glover. The Dons went for two.
And Robinson did the business, pinning the football between the posts from just to the left of the sticks. 8-0.
The visitors had chances early on, but the home goal line defence was superb to keep the Vikings out, with Alex Sutcliffe providing a vital pounce on the ball just yards out from the scoring area.
It was that defence that gave the Dons a platform to build from, and they furthered their advantage after 25 minutes.
Vulikijapani somehow didn't ground over the line on the right, but Horne's side went left, and Robinson looped a huge pass out wide to Glover, who scored with ease in the left-hand corner. Robinson added the extras.
The hosts controlled the remainder of the first half, but the next point-scoring incident didn't come until the half time hooter had sounded.
The Dons were awarded a penalty for a tip tackle, and Robinson notched it between the sticks from out on the right wing for a 16-0 scoreline at half time.
But the visitors provided the threat immediately after the interval. Jumah Sambou intercepted just inside the Dons half and chased after the ball to cross just to the left of the uprights on 44 minutes. Tom Gilmore converted.
Four minutes later Widnes were in again as Gilmore turned try scorer on the right and then added the extras to cut the deficit to suddenly just four points.
The Dons went close at the other end straight away, but the Widnes defence recovered just in time to clear the danger from their own line.
The Vikings had no such luck after 59 minutes. Horne's side made the most of a penalty on halfway and eventually found Gwaze, who bundled over the line directly underneath the posts. Robinson again successfully converted.
The hosts were back in total control and extended their lead nine minutes later. Play was shifted all the way from the right to the left, and Gebbie danced in to score at the corner.
The Dons had killed Widnes' comeback and their spirit as the hosts rode out the remaining 11 minutes of the 80 in comfortable and convincing style to take the two points and rise to second in the Championship table.
Dons: Holmes, Vulikijapani, Lyne, Glover, Gebbie, Robinson, Aston, Knowles, Burns, Matagi, Sutcliffe, Johnson, Mustapha. Interchanges: J. Jones, C. Jones, Hepi, Gwaze.
